Dedication to Canvas (my coms group)

The last Communications entry for the blog YAY!!! Well just want to make the last entry one meaningful post for my communication group and how well they treated me :) even when our lessons clashes in odd days. Nevertheless, they still did not bear a grudge on me, I hope XD. We started off really shaky, cause not everyone in the group is a Singaporean. At the start it was really terrible, especially for me because of the negative perception of being the only guy in the group = slave (from pass experience). Everyone use to be so quiet not wanting to comment on each other’s idea cause of the fear of giving everyone a negative perception of being the devil, which might result in the lousy peer evaluation. But times have change as we spend more time together doing the project; we spend our time doing constructive work while having fun together, laughing, gossiping et cetra. Sometimes my group will speak in their own mother tongue (maybe it is easier to express their thought), but there is always someone who would kindly convert whatever is said into English for those who cannot understand and that includes me (so lucky right? J). One thing I like about my group is that there is really no prejudice on each other. Tolerance is at the max.

Well, I feel that the need to understand each other in a group is really important to doing well. Of course one should not take a stereotyping view of like he’s of another race, hence a loser. Personally, I got to know quite a lot of things from my group like a little of Malay and two lines of Japanese. The fighting scene made and directed by us. These are the little things that might just make one smile for the rest of the day.

being in a group where your team mates are all so foreign to you does not help. however, there is another view that can be seen from. that is the view of a fresh working experience, getting to understand how different people work, better understand team dynamics.
really glad that you have grown in deeper understanding of your team mates. fun does not occur when one is alone. people in our lives help us to enjoy the things we do. they help to add colors in our lives which is something so invaluable.
working in a team helps to settle and make appropriate decisions (especially major ones).

Hi Mao,

There is some truth to your fear of giving constructive criticisms to your teammates for fear of lower evaluation points. I can't say I'm not disappointed how this has become such a problem in Singapore, especially where open thoughts and feelings are heavily promoted in a tertiary educational institution, like the one you're studying in now. However note that it is exactly this thinking that we as Singaporeans to strive to change, accepting and acknowledging our own shortcomings through the eyes of others. I hope you can take initiative and lead your team into accepting this viewpoint that I have, dispelling the thoughts that still plague us Singaporeans for years, always ready for a defense against any kinds of criticism, instead of using it as an analysis against oneself.

Regards,
SQ

Having such a diverse team expands your horizons and shapes your perception differently. You are now empowered with different takes on certain issues and had grown more sensitive when contrasting cultures overlap yours.

driven by individual motives and the hidden agenda to stand out, people tend to resort to unscrupulous tactics. this makes working in a group difficult as everyone wants to excel. the only way to steal the limelight is to do it as a team, therefore " there is no I in team " rings ever so true.
